CAFA Welcomes New Sergeant-at-Arms – Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) Lucien Durelle, MMM, CD, MSM (US)

During CAFA’s Airborne Forces Weekend, which took place at the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre (CAAWC) in Trenton on 22/23 May 2026, the Sergeant-at-Arms appointment changed from Police Sergeant (Retired) Jerry Robertson to Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) Lucien Durelle, CD.

The Sergeant-at-Arms is, for the most part, an honorary appointment for a serving CAFA retired Senior NCO who has done exemplary work as a CAFA member over the years.

CWO Durelle had an exemplary career as a soldier, spending much of his career in Airborne related roles. Joining the CAF in June 1966, he completed his training at the R22eR Depot at the Citadelle in Quebec City before being posted to 3 R22eR in Valcartier. In 1967 he participated in EXPO 67 in Montreal doing honour guards and the next year completed his first tour in Cyprus. He was posted to Germany in 1969, first to Werl and then Lahr, during which time he completed his French Commando course. Subsequent to completing his BPara course a few years later, in 1974 he was promoted to Sergeant and posted to 1 Commando, Canadian Airborne Regiment in Edmonton. The next year he completed Jungle training in Australia and the following summer deployed to Montreal as part of security for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Promoted to Warrant Officer in 1977, he was posted to Petawawa with the relocation of the Cdn AB Regt where he subsequently completed numerous para related advanced courses: Jump Master; Para Instructor; Military Freefall; and Patrol Pathfinder. In June 1980 he was promoted MWO and employed in the AB Regt HQ as the Regimental Emplaning MWO before becoming the 1 Commando Sergeant-major in 1982. He was posted back to 3 R22eR in 1984 with whom he completed his second tour in Cyprus. He was promoted to CWO in 1987 at which time he was posted to National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) in Ottawa. In the spring of 1988 he was selected to attend the Sergeants Major course at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy in El Paso, Texas and upon graduation stayed on as an Instructor. Returning to NDHQ in June 1992, he remained there until his release from the CAF in July 1993 at which time he returned to his birth place in the Acadian peninsula. In October 1998 he enrolled in the primary reserve with 2 RNBR (Old North Shore) as the Regimental Sergeant Major until February 2004 when he became 37 Brigade CWO until February 2006. He subsequently completed a 6 month tour in Bosnia and upon his return he moved to Pickering and was attached to the Land Force Doctrine and Training System in Kingston. His last posting in the CAF was as the Land Forces Central Area CWO in Toronto where, at the age of 60 he retired.

We thank Jerry Robertson for his decade plus of service as the CAFA Sergeant-at-Arms. Jerry joined the reserves in 1970 and transferred to the regular force in 1972 serving with 1 RCR and then 2 Cdo, Cdn AB Regt including during the 1974 Cyprus War. He joined the Toronto Police Service in 1982 and retired from the York Regional Police in 2015. Jerry continues to serve CAFA as the President of #13, Huronia Branch located in Barrie, Ontario.

Au cours de la fin de semaine des Forces aéroportées de l'AFAC, qui s’est déroulée au Centre d'instruction supérieure en guerre terrestre de l'Armée canadienne (CISGTAC) à Trenton les 22 et 23 mai 2026, la fonction de sergent d’armes passa du sergent de police (à la retraite) Jerry Robertson à l’adjudant-chef (à la retraite) Lucien Durelle, CD.

Le poste de sergent d’armes est essentiellement une nomination honorifique destinée à un sous-officier supérieur de l'AFAC à la retraite ayant accompli un travail exemplaire en tant que membre de l'AFAC au fil des ans.

L’adjudant-chef Durelle a mené une carrière exemplaire en tant que soldat, passant une grande partie de celle-ci dans des postes de parachutiste. Il joint FAC en juin 1966, et a suivi sa formation de fantassin au dépot du R22eR à la Citadelle de Québec avant d’être affecté au 3 R22eR à Valcartier. En 1967, il a participé à l’EXPO 67 à Montréal en faisant des gardes d’honneur et, l’année suivante, il a effectué sa première mission à Chypre. Affecté en Allemagne en 1969, d’abord à Werl puis à Lahr, il a suivi pendant cette période le cours de commando français. Quelques années plus tard après avoir terminé son cours de parachutiste, il fut promu sergent en 1974 et affecté au 1er Commando du Régiment aéroporté du Canada (RAC) à Edmonton. L'année suivante, il a suivi un entraînement en jungle en Australie et, l'été suivant, il a été déployé à Montréal dans le cadre de la sécurité des Jeux olympiques de 1976.

Promu adjudant en 1977, il a été affecté à Petawawa lors du déménagement du RAC, où il a par la suite suivi de nombreux cours de para avancés: Chef largueur, Instructeur parachutiste, Chute libre militaire et Patrouilleur éclaireur. En juin 1980, il a été promu adjudant-maître et affecté au QG du Régiment aéroporté en tant qu’adjudant-maître d’embarquement régimentaire, avant de devenir sergent-major du 1er Commando en 1982. Il a été affecté de nouveau au 3 R22eR en 1984, avec lequel il a effectué sa deuxième mission à Chypre. Il a été promu adjudant-chef en 1987, date à laquelle il a été affecté au Quartier général de la Défense nationale (QGDN) à Ottawa. Au printemps 1988, il a été sélectionné pour suivre le cours de sergent-major au United States Army Sergeants Major Academy à El Paso, au Texas, et après avoir obtenu son diplôme, il y est resté en tant qu’instructeur. De retour au QGND en juin 1992, il y est resté jusqu’à sa libération des FAC en juillet 1993, date à laquelle il est retourné dans sa ville natale, sur la péninsule acadienne. En octobre 1998, il s’est enrôlé dans la réserve primaire au sein du 2 RNBR (Old North Shore) en tant que sergent-major régimentaire jusqu’en février 2004, date à laquelle il est devenu l’adjudant-chef de la 37e Brigade jusqu’en février 2006. Il a ensuite effectué une mission de six mois en Bosnie et, à son retour, il s’est installé à Pickering et a été affecté au Système de la doctrine et de l'instruction de la Force terrestre à Kingston. Son dernier poste au sein des FAC était celui d’adjudant-chef du Secteur du Centre de la Force terrestre à Toronto, où il a pris sa retraite à l’âge de 60 ans.

Nous remercions Jerry Robertson pour plus de dix années de service en tant que sergent d’armes de l'AFAC. Jerry s’est enrôlé dans la Réserve en 1970 et a été transféré à la Force régulière en 1972, servant au sein du 1 RCR puis du 2e Commando du Régiment aéroporté du Canada, notamment pendant la guerre de Chypre de 1974. Il s’est joint au service de police de la ville de Toronto en 1982 et a pris sa retraite de la Police régionale de York en 2015. Jerry continue de servir l'AFAC en tant que président de la section n° 13, Huronia, située à Barrie, en Ontario.
